Gilmer ends Carthage’s 38-game streak and earns every bit of the fuss

Gilmer scored 49 points on Carthage, stopped the Bulldogs on their last four chances and sent a 38-game winning streak into the history book. The Buckeyes’ 49–42 victory Friday at Jeff Traylor Stadium was earned the hard way, against a program that generally makes the other fellow explain himself.

FIVE POINTS05

FROM THE BEARD.

01

THE COMEBACK

Magnolia finishes the job after the touchdowns against Klein Cain

Magnolia still had work to do after getting in front of Klein Cain on Thursday. The Bulldogs blocked the final extra point, recovered an onside kick and finally secured a 37–34 victory. A lead is a fine thing. Keeping it requires a few more chores.

02

THE STATEMENT

Shadow Creek answers unbeaten Pearland with 55 points and a strong finish

Pearland came in unbeaten and left with a 55–35 loss. Shadow Creek did enough Friday to earn the headline, including some defensive work that should not get buried beneath those 55 points.

03

THE CLOSE FINISH

King follows the North Shore win with another piece of district business

C.E. King had already collected the North Shore headlines. Thursday required another win, and Summer Creek was under no obligation to be impressed by the previous week.

04

THE BIG WIN

North Crowley scores the first 30 and takes the doubt out of Mansfield

North Crowley scored the first 30 points Thursday against Mansfield. That is a fairly efficient way for an unbeaten favorite to keep an underdog from getting comfortable.

05

THE CLOSING DRIVE

North Forney’s last possession tells the story against Rockwall-Heath

North Forney found a practical solution to Rockwall-Heath’s comeback Friday. The Falcons kept the football until there was no comeback left to attempt.

THE ROUNDUP / ANALYSIS

THE BEARD’S TAKE.

Allen keeps my vote after putting 56 on McKinney Boyd, but North Crowley is making this a real argument. Seventy-two against Mansfield after 75 against Skyline is a loud response to anyone treating second place like a consolation prize. Those two are setting the pace. The Houston argument needs some honesty. North Shore's 77–0 win over Channelview was emphatic, but it does not erase C.E. King's 42–21 head-to-head win. King followed that with a 27–20 win over Summer Creek. I am giving those results more weight than the size of one rebound score. And quit treating Waxahachie and Katy like background noise. Waxahachie beat Duncanville, then shut out Crowley. Katy just beat Taylor 66–0. Allen leads this poll; it does not own November. There are several teams here with a legitimate reason to believe they can knock the door down.
