THE BEARD’S ROUNDUP / November 3, 2026

Keller can score. Eaton can finish. Friday has teeth.

Eighty points.

Before anybody starts passing around playoff calculators, Keller needs to sit with that number for a minute. The Indians scored 49 against Keller Central last Friday and still lost by 31. That is an offensive highlight reel attached to a defensive emergency.

Now comes Eaton, a team that has spent October doing the opposite of falling apart. Four straight wins. A season pulled back from 1–4. And a Friday night in Keller with a playoff berth close enough to grab.

Eaton at Keller kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday, November 6, at the Keller ISD Athletic Complex. The Eagles arrive 5–4 overall and 4–2 in District 4-6A. The Indians are 6–3 and 3–3. One team has recovered its footing. The other needs to find the brakes.

Six wins bought Keller an opportunity. They did not buy November.

Keller opened 6–0. Good football, plenty of points, and enough close escapes to make a man believe the Indians knew how to finish. They beat Timber Creek 55–46, survived Boswell 54–53 and put away Byron Nelson 49–42.

Then Carroll won 40–28. Northwest won 27–14. Central hung 80 on the board.

There is your three-game losing streak, and there is the problem Carl Stralow has to solve. Keller has allowed 147 points in those three losses. The Indians do not need another lecture about how much the game matters. They need somebody to get off a block, take a sound angle and finish a tackle.

None of that means Keller is harmless. Running back Blake Dyniewski rushed for 226 yards and three touchdowns against Central. A defense that walks into this game assuming the Indians are broken could spend its evening admiring the back of his jersey.

But asking the offense to rescue every possession is a poor way to conduct November business. Score 49 and lose by 31, and the next conversation ought to involve the defense before anybody compliments the fireworks.

Eaton has earned something better than a sympathy story.

Ellis Miller’s Eagles were 1–4 after losses to Byron Nelson and Carroll. That is the point in a season when the easy explanations start showing up. Tough district. Close losses. Maybe next year.

Eaton went and won football games instead.

The turnaround started with a 28–27 win over Central. Then came Boswell, 42–14; Timber Creek, 48–24; and Northwest, 38–23. Four consecutive district wins have turned a team staring at another long offseason into one that can settle its own playoff business Friday.

The Central result deserves a second look. Eaton beat the same program that just scored 80 on Keller. That does not produce a reliable prediction by subtraction. Football has never been that cooperative. It does establish that Eaton has already survived a tight finish against a team capable of doing serious damage.

Against Northwest, the Eagles finished with a 14-point fourth quarter. In the Timber Creek win, they recovered from a slow start and scored 35 consecutive points. There is a difference between announcing that you are resilient and leaving evidence on the field.

Eaton has been leaving evidence.

Thursday has a vote in Friday’s argument.

Here is where the playoff discussion needs accuracy instead of a dramatic slogan.

This is not automatically a winner-in, loser-out game. Byron Nelson plays Timber Creek on Thursday, November 5, and that result changes what Keller and Eaton carry into Friday.

  • Eaton clinches with a win over Keller. A Nelson loss also clinches a berth for Eaton, regardless of Friday’s result.
  • Keller clinches with a win over Eaton and a Nelson loss. A Keller win with a Nelson win is not the same simple guarantee; the remaining results and district tiebreakers must be applied.
  • Keller is eliminated with a loss to Eaton and a Timber Creek loss to Nelson. Other combinations can leave tied records and a more complicated finish.

Those are the published District 4-6A scenarios as of November 3. The district uses head-to-head results, then a point-differential system capped at 18 for ties involving three or more teams. Official district decisions control the final field.

So watch Thursday. Then watch Friday. Just do not mistake a helpful result elsewhere for a substitute for playing well yourself.

The first useful stop may be worth more than the prettiest touchdown.

For Keller, the assignment starts with making Eaton earn an entire drive. Force another snap. Make the tackle that ends the possession. Give Dyniewski and the offense a chance to operate without carrying a fire extinguisher.

For Eaton, the danger is believing the standings have already done the work. A Nelson loss could settle the Eagles’ qualification before kickoff. It would not make Keller’s running game slower, and it would not make a sloppy Friday useful preparation for the playoffs.

I would watch the first response to adversity more closely than the opening script. Keller has to show that a bad series will not become another runaway quarter. Eaton has to show that a four-game winning streak has produced discipline, not entitlement.

That is where this game gets interesting. Stralow has an offense with enough punch to hurt somebody. Miller has a team that has remembered how to finish. Both ought to understand that the next opponent will not be grading their intentions.

The Beard’s take

I lean Eaton. That is a judgment about the football being played lately, not a promise that common opponents can pick the winner for us.

The Eagles have built four weeks of evidence that they can recover, answer and finish. Keller can absolutely make that pick look foolish if Dyniewski gets loose and the defense finally gives the offense a workable night.

But until the Indians show they can stop the bleeding, I am not asking 49 points to do the job of 81.

Six early wins gave Keller a shot. Four straight district wins gave Eaton a path back. Friday decides what those opportunities are worth.

Bring the playoff calculator if you want. Bring somebody who can tackle first.
